Mark Wahlberg has once again apologized for making controversial comments about September 11th in the new issue of Men's Journal, and is now calling into question the journalist who wrote the story, as well.

Wahlberg told the writer that he would have fought off the terrorists had he been on one of the hijacked planes on September 11th, 2001. The comment was taken out of context, he told a number of radio interviewers.

"I don't go out doing publicity for movies or a magazine cover talking about what's important to me," he told the Kidd Kraddick Radio Show. "I want to promote the movie and whatever questions they want to ask me I am more than comfortable talking about. But it wasn't a Q&A where it was the exact question and my exact response. It was somebody's interpretation of it and you know... that's not OK because I don't want people to be offended. I would never do that."

(You know, the third wife that introduced him to Catholicism.)

[It is! The check engine light causes more misunderstanding and miscommunication than anything else in a vehicle! I hate it and think it should be banned from use.]

In my seven years of car ownership, the only time I've ever seen the "check engine" light was when I neglected to screw in the gas cap tightly enough on my Accord. That wasn't very useful. But our ex-sibling site, Jalopnik, made the case earlier this week that there's no good reason why car makers can't just do away with the "check engine" light altogether, and have our cars actually tell us what's wrong with them.

Jason Torchinsky argues that otherwise, consumers have no access to error codes that are impossible to access without specialized equipment, and are more beholden to potentially crooked mechanics.

Basically, the generic "check engine" light makes it easier for dishonest mechanics to take advantage of unknowing customers. Considering other car features that are federally-mandated -- like tire pressure sensors and airbag warning lights -- wouldn't adding one to actually help the consumer make sense? It may be the only type of federal-required feature that makes sense.
Which is why we need a federal mandate that bans the generic "check engine" light in new cars and instead requires, on dash, OBD-II codes and a basic description. The only rational reasons it hasn't happened yet range from a best-case scenario of simple manufacturer desire to build as cheaply as possible, to an actual deliberate campaign of forced ignorance in order to keep dealer network profit streams. Neither of those reasons -- or any in between them -- are valid or acceptable.

Personally, I look forward to being able to look at my dash and have it say, simply, "Tighten the gas cap, dumbass."

Yesterday, the world exploded and will never be the same after Mark "Contraband" Wahlberg gave a quote to Men's Fitness about how he would have STOPPED 9/11. It was a real watershed moment for all of us. When there was only one set of bloody footprints in first class, that was Mark Wahlberg, carrying the terrorist's dead body. Of course, Mark Wahlberg has already "apologized" for his statements, because this is still ~~NAZI GERMANY~~ President Obama's America after all. The apology, as you would expect, is boring. Newsweek made this week waves once again, this time for the lead story titled, "Why are Obama's critics so dumb?" Today, on Fox and Friends, host Gretchen Carlson asked her "fair and balanced" panel to discuss whether her outrage over the headline is justified. While most made the point that the headline is predominantly a sales-pitch, the "liberal" guest, TV talk show host Jerry Springer, opted to note the irony.

"It is a little disingenuous," he said. "Here we are at Fox, complaining that Newsweek may be a little partisan." Noting that magazines and other media outlets often take — or sell — opinions, Springer pointed out that Carlson's outrage might be misplaced considering that "you guys, every single day, bash President Obama":

SPRINGER: If the point of this discussion is to be upset with a magazine that — even if it took the position that they're pro-Obama — again, everybody in the media is doing things like that. We're here on Fox News. Every single day, in fairness, you guys, every single day, bash President Obama.

CARLSON: I'm going to take you to task on that because on this panel right here, we have a fair and balanced panel right here. And I'm the independent.

SPRINGER: But, what's the rest of the show? The rest of the show, every single morning, you guys are slamming Obama. You know you are. I'm not saying you don't have a right to. But every single conversation is something bad about Obama.

Carlson's "independence" must be seconds old. After all, Fox and Friends has never missed an opportunity to blast Obama, be it over the Iraq War, recess appointments, terrorism, income inequality, Christmas, or for generally existing.

The fair and balanced Carlson herself has unloaded on Obama, claiming he is putting "politics ahead of jobs for the American People," or that he is "grinching 15 cents out of your pocket," or that he is "working overtime now to raise taxes." She's even offered advice to GOP candidates on exactly how to campaign against the president. But Carlson insisted to Springer, "you obviously don't watch our show." [Anyone who's either eaten one of PD's receipes or made it in their home knows how "healthy" these things are. It's no surprise to me that she's fallen to one of this country's most common diseases. Sad, but reasonably foreseeable.]

Paula Deen is known for packing in the butter in her recipes, with such recipes as doughnut hamburgers (with bacon and a fried egg, of course) and Krispy Kreme bread pudding. But now that she's going on air to announce that she has Type 2 diabetes, it's probably the perfect time to announce that she's the new paid spokesperson for a diabetes drug company. Timing is everything.

Speaking of timing, she tells the Today show's Al Roker that she was diagnosed three years ago. During that time, her recipes have continued to include high calories, sugar and fat. She says she wanted to wait to tell everyone when she had something to bring to the table.

And now she's bringing a diabetes company to that calorie-laden table.

"I'm working along with a very reputable pharmaceutical company, I'm working on a program called 'Diabetes In A New Light,' you can go to our website," says Paula. "I'm gonna be there for you, I'm going to help you manage every day of your life with this, because it can be done."

At which point Al kindly points out that the viewers should know Paula is getting paid for her endorsement.

"Absolutely I have been compensated, just as you are for your work," admits Paula.

So what does she have to say to the haters out there who point out that it's just her kind of cooking that can contribute to a diabetes diagnosis?

"That's part of the puzzle, but there are many other things that can lead to diabetes," Paula explains, helpfully pointing out anything that is not her food. "Certainly genetics, certainly your life style, certainly what you eat, certainly stress," as well as age.

But also? Stuffing unhealthy food in your mouth.

Think about some of the problems of our daily lives, and how many of them would be eased if we could learn to sit alone, in a quiet empty room, with contentment.

If you're content to sit alone quietly, you don't need to eat junk food, to shop on impulse, to buy the latest gadget, to be on social media to see what everyone else is talking about or doing, to compare yourself to others, to make more money to keep up with the Joneses, to achieve glory or power, to conquer other lands or wage war, to be rude or violent to others, to be selfish or greedy, to be constantly busy or productive.

You are content, and need nothing else. It solves a lot of problems.

Can you sit alone in an empty room? Can you enjoy the joy of quiet?

Most of us have trouble sitting alone, quietly, doing nothing. We have the need to do something, to check our inboxes and social media, to be productive. Sitting still can be difficult if you haven't cultivated the habit.

I've been learning. In the morning, as my coffee is brewing, I sit. Even for a few minutes, at first, it is instructive. You learn to listen to your thoughts, to be aware of your urges to do something else, to plan and set goals. You learn to watch yourself, but to just sit still and not act on those urges. You learn to be content with stillness.

You learn to savor the quiet. It's something most of us don't have, quiet, and it takes some getting used to. When we're driving our cars or out exercising or eating or working, we have music playing or we talk with people or we have the television on. Quiet can be amazing, though, because it helps us calm down, contemplate, slow down to savor the emptiness.

An empty room, too, is a luxury. I try to empty my room of clutter, so that it's fairly bare. That leaves only me, and the room is a blank slate ready to be filled with me, my creativity, my silence. I love a spartan room.

Being alone is another pleasure we too often neglect. When we are alone, we go on the Internet or TV to see what else is going on, what others are doing or saying, instead of just being alone. This isolation is a necessary thing, that allows us to find ourselves, to learn to be content with little instead of always wanting more.

Can you practice being alone, being still, being quiet? Just a little at first, then perhaps a bit more. Listen, watch, learn about yourself. Find contentment. Need nothing more.

The good news is that Alexis isn't going to have to pay the $44 million bill he received after a hospital treated his pneumonia. The bad is that hundreds of others also received ridiculous bills after a billing company made the teensy error of entering the invoice numbers into the amount due box. Woopsies.

The New York Daily News talked to Alexis, an unemployed doorman, who'd already had a bunch of bills a few months ago from the hospital for treating his pneumonia. But the most recent one for $44,776,587 for outpatient services was the biggest of them all.

"I almost had an asthma attack," he told the paper, as he should've been paying only about $300. Turns out he was one of hundreds with overblown bills, as Alexis found out when he called the billing company, PHY Services.

They say the subcontractor that prints the bills was the culprit behind the number switcheroo.

"We are sending an apology letter to everyone who received it," said PHY Services rep Ricardo Paul.

They advise anyone who received a statement from them to ignore it, as they'll get a new one soon. But really, what else would you do -- write a check for a few million and send it off?

The New York Philharmonic's Tuesday performance of Mahler's Ninth symphony was halted by an unwelcomed sound: someone's ringing iPhone (using the marimba ringtone). It rang repeatedly in the fourth movement of Mahler's final completed symphony. From Super-Conductor:

According to an eyewitness, the offending phone owner was in the front rows of Avery Fisher Hall when his phone went off. (A post by Michael Jo on the classical music blog thousandfoldecho.com specifies that the interruption happened just 13 bars before the last page of the score.) In other words, in the final moments of a 25-minute movement, that ends a 90-minute symphony.

"Mr. Gilbert was visibly annoyed by the persistent ring-tone, so much that he quietly cut the orchestra," the concert-goer, music student Kyra Sims, reports. She related how the orchestra's music director turned on the podium towards the offender. The pause lasted a good "three or four minutes. It might have been two. It seemed long."

Ah yes. The dream. To lose weight while eating in restaurants and thus maintaining needed contact with other humans. Can it be done? According to one study, yes, it can.

Let's pass it over to our scientific sisters at Consumer Reports for the details:

An article published today in the January Journal of Nutrition Education and Behavior has given me a glimmer of hope. Researchers at the University of Texas, Austin looked at 35 women aged 40 to 59 years old who reported eating out an average of 5.6 times a week. Participants were screened for eating disorders or health problems that could influence the study.
One group of women received counseling and training on what the researchers called "Mindful Restaurant Eating", which included lessons on portion sizes, being able to identify hunger cues, and being more fully aware of what you are eating (so that you can hopefully feel more satisfied). The control group received no training.

All participants were asked on three separate days to recall what they ate over the past 24 hours. When the results were in - guess what - the training helped. After six weeks, the mindful eaters had significantly less weight gain at the end of the study than the control group, even though they were still eating in restaurants as often as before. Overall they reduced their caloric intake by almost 300 calories per day, and that reduction applied to what they ate at home as well, so the training benefited them away from the watchful eye of a waiter. And they even lost a little weight.

You know that mysterious Postal Service gadget that's been in your desk drawer since the day you took the job? Or perhaps it's on top of a cupboard in the mailroom, by the dessicated remains of a long-dead potted plant.

Either way, the service wants it back. Thousands of USPS hand-held scanners are missing, and it has run out of new ones.

"We have a critical shortage," writes the service's Jim Cochrane in a press release. "Check storage areas and cabinets. Talk with everyone who has been a part of the program. Let's find them and get them back in inventory."

Handed out as part of the Surface Visibility program, which began in 2004, the scanners are used to collect data on letters and packages. As time has gone by, nearly 2,300 of them have fallen into disuse without being returned to the service.

Refurbishing existing handsets avoids the expense of manufacturing new ones: an unappetizing prospect, given the USPS's business woes.

The Postal Service wants them back before the end of January, 2012, with any batteries removed. There's been a lot talk around here these days about where we came from and where we're going. It's been wonderful to see how things have changed since we've been back in Kansas City. New church, new gym. Practically a new life. All of it is evidence that God only wants what's best for us. We have a great group of friends and our own relationship has never been better. There are somedays that I can't believe that we are where we are. Looking back over the course of the last couple years, it amazes me that so many things have fallen into place the way to have. And now I'm absolutely sure that it is God's plan for us to be where we are.

It's always good to be open to change. If you're not, you get stuck. And if you're stuck, it usually means that things aren't going the way you would want. But it's not always about how you want things to go. Many times your plans are not the best thing for you. God knows what's best for all of us and even though sometimes we may not agree with it, it's best if we listen to what He says and do what you tell us to do.

I know it sounds stupid and childish, but hear me out. We do not know what's best for ourselves. I always thought I did, but I was wrong. You may be in the same place. I understand. When I was fat, sick and mostly dead I still had no clue that I was falling into a pit of despair with no clear way out. Every wrong thing I thought, every poor decision I made just put me in a worse position. And that was the first 25 years of my life! Since then, I've cleaned up my act considerably. People who used to know me probably wouldn't recognize me now. I've been following Christ for seven years whereas I used to be a fervant atheist. I hated church and anything to do with it. I have come to know who God truly is and stopped looking to His ridiculous, overly religious followers for direction. It's important to make your walk your own. If not, none of this makes any sense.

I have to cut this short. Life to live, things to do. More on this subject to come. I'm just feeling an extraordinary need to say everything I can possibly say about this! Have a good weekend and I will talk to you later!
